Jason Collins
Associate Systems Engineer
ThyssenKrupp Presta
Jason Collins never realized as a child growing up in Danville
that his fascination with video games would lead him to a career
in Information Technology.
Jason's career with ThyssenKrupp Presta began about six and one-half
years ago as an IT Support Technician after he graduated from
Danville Area Community College in 2003 with an Associate's Degree
in Computer Communications & Networks. After two years he
was promoted to the position he holds today, which is an Associate
Systems Engineer.
In his current capacity, Jason administers and creates accounts,
administers the email system, takes care of active director infrastructure
and other day-to-day tasks. Jason's excitement about what he does
is obvious. He says one of the best things about what he does
is continually work with cutting edge technology. "When some
new technology comes out and we get it in and we open the box,
it's almost like being a child on Christmas morning seeing the
new stuff and being the first ones to turn it on."
But just as exciting as technology can be, he also cites is as
one of the most challenging and frustrating parts of his job.
"The hours can sometimes get rough when you balance between
family and work. When something breaks at 2:00 or 3:00 in the
morning, you've got to come in and fix it." Those challenges
aside, Jason's vision for his career's future remains with technology.
"Someday I would like to grow into a Senior Systems position.
I would also like to finish my bachelor's degree and receive more
specialized certifications. With technology you can never get
enough training today."
Jason's
advice to students or adults alike who may think they want to
explore career opportunities involving technology would be to
"search and look for something that fits you -- software
applications, hardware support , infrastructure support -- find
your niche. IT is an area that will not go away."
Jason
has lived in Danville his entire life. He graduated from Danville
High School in 1994. He has no regrets about deciding to stay
in his home town. "My family is here and there are all kinds
of outdoor activities with our state and county parks. Sometimes
I just like to get out and take hikes with my kids."
As for a career with ThyssenKrupp Presta, he has no regrets either.
"ThyssenKrupp Presta is a great company to work for. The
people are great and they stay on top of state-of-the-art technology.
It is a nice, safe environment in which to work."
